(More customer reviews)I guess the Octapad series has been around for a long time. The SPD-30 is the Octapad's newest incarnation.
Obvious features are the LCD display which simplifies pad configuration and editing, a good set of drum sounds, and knobs for controlling edits. There's also a slot for a USB thumbdrive and a USB interface for connecting the SPD-30 to a computer.
The pads are almost but not quite playable by hand, more's the pity. When choosing drumsticks, generally speaking, a heavier drumstick works better than a light one. And don't be surprised at how much force has to be applied to make a pad sound.(Fred Flintstone would be a shoe-in for playing the Octapad.)
This is one of those times when I wimp out and say "try before you buy." You may find it too difficult to get a consistent note to sound even though you're pounding on the pads. Or you can't stand the builtin drum sounds.
One alternative worth checking out is the DD-65 from Yamaha. It is a little friendlier and is really meant to replace an acoustic drumkit.
